So, to kick off my update marathon, I've got to start with yet another WIRED success story - the wonderful Etta Bond.

We've chatted with Etta a few times on here over the last few months, and since becoming a regular performer at WIRED has begun to make huge waves in the pop world. And Etta's first assault on the charts begins with 'Foregiveness', a collaboration with t'other Wirey peeps Wretch 32 (on talking/singing) and Labrinth (on drums/tambourine). This week marked the release of the brand new music video, with Wretch and Etta also dropping-in on the Hollyoaks gang to stir things up.

Expect more things from Wretch, Lab and Etta coming very soon. Such an honour to be able to DJ with such talented (and bloody lovely) people!

Forgiveness is the Wretch 32 latest single taken from his album 'Black And White'. Produced by Labrinth, Forgiveness features Etta Bond and is released on the 11th of December 2011.

UPDATE : New Projects. New People. New Music!

Hello gang,

I'm back! Sorry it's been so long (whenever isn't it?!). I've been juggling lots of cool stuff in my day job at Razorfish (putting together lots of very cool ad campaigns for McDonald's) and working hard to build my new residency at The Shoreditch in east London. So apologies that the blog hasn't been getting the TLC it deserves.

Jamie Clews: he's northern.

In terms of updates, we've now officially welcomed a new face into the bosom of the Stop.Look.Listen. machine, namely Mr. Jamie Clews, a very close friend of mine from Bournemouth Uni. Jamie began his DJing journey up in Rugby and has proven himself to be a huge personality behind the decks. His sound is slanted a bit more towards the Annie Mac/Zane Lowe end of the spectrum, which has only helped to diversify the SLL sound and give us even broader appeal. It's been a breath of fresh air - great to have him on board at last.

Between us, Jamie and I are now heading up Thursdays and Saturdays at The Shoreditch, playing 8-2am upstairs in the week and in the club Saturdays. It's been quite a while since I've done a club residency, but I'm absolutely loving it again!

The music and gigs are coming thick and fast, so I'll be back with lots of review shizzle shortly. And not forgetting that Stop.Look.Listen. are also the London ambassadors for global house label Strictly Rhythm, so look out for updates on Strictly Scene coming soon too.

Hi all,

Tonight I will be making my formal debut at Stop.Look.Listen.'s new home The Shoreditch on Shoreditch High Street.

I'll be laying down a whacky mix of Thursday night gems to set the mood for the weekend, through sophisticated soul, funk, disco and pop. I'll be manning the soundsystem from 8pm-2am, so pop down if you fancy a couple of cheeky ones after a long week in the office. It's Friday tomorrow after all!

VIDEO : Kadija Kamara - Talking To Myself

Hi all,

So today I thought I’d remind you about the intensely glamorous and hugely talented Kadija Kamara.

We announced the launch of her latest EP ‘Changes’ some months ago now, with the best bit being that it sounds even fresher on second listen! Anyhow, Kadija has just announced the launch of an official video for ‘Talking To Myself’ in advance of its single release towards the end of the summer. Most exciting is that it features remixes from Mr. Zed Bias - sooo gotta hear that!

Anyhow, Kadija’s done a great job at concealing clues to her whereabouts in London in the vid, so all you Smoke Dwellers see if you recognise any of the locations. I can name a few! Ah London - nothing like home. :-)

CARLA JAYE

Carla Jaye is an 18 year old up and coming Singer/Songwriter from London. She is currently working in the studio with Conquest on her forthcoming album. She had recently appeared on LinkUpTV, with the video of her cover of Alicia Keys' 'A Woman's Worth' recognised as talent of the week. In turn, it was then uploaded to Worldstarhiphop.com and had over 12,0000 views in less than two weeks. Carla Jaye is set to make her mark in the music industry this year.

LEANNE ROBINSON

Bursting onto the Pop Music scene comes Leanne Robinson, in possession of a voice that travels through legendary influence, from the Soul sensibilities of Aretha Franklin and contemporary class of Beyonce Knowles. Renowned for her powerful and emotive vocal ability, Leanne has graduated at The BRIT School, following the same steps as Adele, Jessie J, Leona Lewis & Katy B leaving with a profound appreciation for her honed craft, intent on pursuing the proverbial dream.

THE THIRST

Regarded as one of London’s best live bands, able to transverse subcultures and genres, they’ve already toured with Pete Doherty, The Rolling Stones and The Sex Pistols, opened up for The Libertines and shared stages with grime stalwarts like Kano and Wiley.

Championed by musos from NME, RWD, The Guardian and MTV Base, it’s nearly two years since their critically acclaimed debut 'On The Brink' was released on Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood’s Wooden Records. Sadly, with the label becoming defunct soon after, an amicable split left the band with some valuable lessons learnt.

Currently in the studio putting the finishing touches to their second album, Brixton based four-piece 'The Thirst' aren’t letting the recent set backs dampen their funk laced rock spirit. Used to hustling to make ends meet, driving around the country in rickety tour vans (at times even getting towed to gigs), the self-schooled group believe it’s the constant shit that fertilises their ever-evolving sound.

Happy Saturday gang!

Just a quick note to let y'all know I'll be doing a special 4.5 hour set tonight at Bar Indigo in Windsor. By all accounts the venue is frequented by some pretty big celebrities, with everyone from Princes William and Harry to Mat Horne and Peter Stringfellow cited as regulars. No pressure there then! :-)

Anyhow, if you're about pop along I'll be playing all night, from 10pm to 2.30am.

Morning all,

I had a bit of an unfortunate start to the weekend as some thieving arse nicked my iPhone last night. Tip: if you're in a central London pub and someone distracts you by laying a scrappy piece of card of the table - GRAB YOUR PHONE! By the time we'd told him to jog on, he'd taken the card and the phone and had it away on his toes. In true Hollywood style, I pursued the thief and the swag, but he got away. Good buzz for a Friday night though!

Jay Kay and the Jamiroquai boys have been kind enough to release 'Smile' as a free download.

Not included on their latest album 'Rock Dust Light Star', this is classic Jamiroquai in a similar vein to their earlier material. 'Smile features a low-tempo funk groove drenched in Rhodes tremelo, soaring strings, funky brass and guitar lines, with Jay Kay's caressing vocals holding the whole thing together. Lovely stuff.

Hello again,

This great lil' package dropped in my Inbox yesterday - a sampler from the forthcoming Untold Songs: Remixes EP1 from label Jus Like Music.

Some fantastic new and established talent on this one, including the lyrical splendour of Belle, who is fast becoming a firm favourite of mine. Remixes are then provided by staple dub dudes Silkie and Quest, with Quest's rework of Belle's 'Open My Eyes' a personal highlight; Quest provides a typically chugging, infectious groove which just builds and builds. It's actually pretty reminiscent of Carl Craig's remix work, and that's saying something!

But all this freeness has a purpose - Remixes EP1 is the precursor to the Untold Songs: Volume One 23-track compilation that is dropping on 13 June in conjunction with Amnesty International. It's all for charity, so be sure to check back at the Bandcamp page on Monday as the full album is a mere £5, with the majority of proceeds going to charity.

A few days ago I was sent this fantastic track from Lyrics Born, one of the most influential pioneers of West Coast hip-hop over the last 15 years or so (that's him on the front cover of DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing').

Featuring Sam Sparro, this is a disco-tinged party workout which captures the spirit of the New York club scene in the late-70s perfectly. Already one of my tracks of 2011 - can't wait to play this out!

Hi again everyone,

So I tried (and failed) to do a podcast yesterday, mainly because my laptop didn't like me plugging more than one USB interface into it, so Serato kept on jumping. Rubbish.

But fear not: in my infinite wisdom, I decided to bung a load of tunes in a Spotify playlist for your enjoyment instead. I call it 'The SLL June BBQ Mix', having put it together just before going to a barbecue yesterday (which was awesome by the way - thanks Dan and Makeda - even if I did end up with expletives scrawled across my forehead and a Haribo Goldbear jammed up my nose!). Anyhow, the weather in London was gorgeous yesterday, so the tunes are pretty chilled and lounge-esque, very reflective of the mood I was in.

FORTHCOMING : Benji Boko feat. Maxi Jazz - Where My Heart Is (Tru Thoughts)

Hi all,

Really excited about this one, as I reckon it could be one of THE anthems of the summer.

In his first outing since Faithless recently disbanded, Maxi Jazz features on Benji Boko's new single 'Where My Heart Is', out on 23rd May via Tru Thoughts.

A slight departure from the Faithless output of old, this is melodic downtempo, but with a unique yet classic twist in the shape of Maxi's signature spoken-word.

Given this, it's quite befitting that promotion for the single also has a twist: Tru Thoughts are inviting artists to download Phase 1 of the video above and manipulate it to occupy the white backdrop with their own creations. Winners of the comp will then be invited to a filming in June, where they'll be asked to recreate their ideas on a giant canvas in real-time, the idea being that the footage will then be edited down into the final music video.

The deadline for submissions is 23rd May - you can get all the details via Benji's website here.

GIGS : Showcase Presents, WIRED and FestiFeel 2011!

Hello Music World!

Wow - it's been over a month hasn't it! Sorry to keep you all waiting. I went on a wonderful holiday to Bali mid-way through March and I've been bonkers on McDonald's stuff at work ever since I got back. I did manage to Shazam a few wicked tunes while I was out there though - see the video above of Osibisa's 'Sunshine Day' - my pick of the bunch and now a firm favourite in my DJ sets.

Anyways, I thought I'd just give you a recap of what's been going on music-wise, and a preview of what's coming up...

Showcase Presents at Madame JoJo's, 28th March | 4th April

Did two great gigs here and got to see some wonderful acts on stage, including the electric Jack Savortetti, Matti Roots (who was kind enough to gift me a copy of his latest album - essential!) and Trophy Wife.

Safe to say I can't wait for the next event to be announced, as I think I've started to find my feet musically at this amazing venue. Anyhow, keep your eyes peeled for future shows which I'll be posting up on the blog soon.

I had another fantastic time at WIRED this week. There were some typically timeless performances from old faves Obenewa and The Neutronics, alongside the hugely talented Ruby Goe and Random Impulse (oh, and me spinning some toons!).

I've no doubt there'll video and photographic evidence shortly, so watch this space. Thanks to the Wirey Family for yet another fantastic night...

Highlights from FestiFeel 2010

FestiFeel 2011 at The Water Rats, 1st May, 12pm - 1am

Then to kick-off the 2011 festival season, I'm hugely excited to be playing at this year's FestiFeel, a one-day music event on 1st May at The Water Rats in Kings Cross. The event is run by CoppaFeel!, a charity striving to stamp-out late detection of breast cancer in young women, by encouraging everyone to check their breasts regularly for early warning signs.

Thanks to the support of the charity's new Celebrity Patrons Fearne Cotton and Dermot O'Leary, I'll be DJing alongside Noah and the Whale, Norman Jay MBE (one of my favourite DJs of all time!!), Daley from Gorillaz (who Kris - CoppaFeel's Founder - personally requested after his knock-out performance at WIRED) and Huw Stephens from Radio 1, amongst a host of other fantastic artists. Fearne and Dermot will also be in attendance - safe to say the prospect of DJing to such celeb royalty is going to be pretty nerve-racking!

Tickets are available here if you fancy coming along - gonna be a great day, all in a very worthy cause.

Hi all,

Just thought I'd post a note to let everyone know I'll be on hols for the next two weeks - off to BALI for some R+R - WOOP! (Just hope that the earthquake doesn't dole out any weighty aftershocks in Indonesia while I'm away. :-S)

Man, do I need it - the last few weeks have been so busy with music stuff, and if the bookings are anything to go by, the start of the festival season when I get back is going to be MEGA, not to mention super intense!

Anyhow, after WIRED on Monday a few people were asking me to send them some playlist shizzle. Well, I've gone one better; there's a really cool app I found called Unify, which converts your iTunes playlists to Spotify playlists (well, those tunes available in Spotify, that is). So I thought, what better way to tide you lot over while I'm away than a playlist of everything I've shortlisted for WIRED - OVER THE LAST 6 MONTHS!!!

FEATURE : Ben Westbeech (Strictly Rhythm)

Hi all,

So some of you may be aware that I've been asked to be a London Ambassador for house label Strictly Rhythm. As such, I'll be keeping my ear to the scene in London, documenting my musings and having them published via Strictly's new UK website. It's a huge honour as I've been listening to their output for many, many years, and the label's been a solid foundation for the weird and wacky music taste I have now!

Anyhow, I've also been in touch with one of Ben Westbeech's digital promotion agencies, and on Thursday this week I was invited to attend an industry showcase night at Life near Old Street, London, where Ben was due to perform material from his new album for the very first time.

Ben's new material sees him return to his deep house roots, but in true Westbeech style he's done away with the rule book, underpinning every track with his uniquely moving and charming soulful vibe.

It's looking to be a big album for the summer, with the focus more on big room, feel-good anthems. Check the video I took on the night above - I'm pretty certain this is going to be one of the lead singles from the album (guessing it's going to be titled 'Weekend' or something similar). Anyhow, I reckon if you're out in Ibiza this year you're almost certain to hear this on loop, or one of the inevitable remixes which will no doubt drop soon. Anyhow, let me know what you think. BTW, my iPhone really doesn't do the set justice, believe me... ;-)

So through my work at WIRED I'm hugely excited to be DJing for a night called Showcase Presents at Madame Jojos in Soho, London.

The premise is simple - Showcase Presents... looks to seek out the best new music currently performing in the UK, with Madame Jojos providing the perfect, intimate backdrop: Foals, Bloc Party, The Horrors, The Klaxons, Mystery Jets, The Kills, Jarvis Cocker and Sophie Ellis Bextor having all graced the stage previously.

After a short hiatus, the night returns on Monday 28th March with headliner Jack Savoretti taking to the stage. Here's some word jazz from the press release:

Jack Savoretti has already had tracks featured on Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill and Greek and has a large international following. He has shared stages with Corinne Bailey Rae, Gavin De Graw and many more. This is a one off exclusive London show.

Jack Savoretti is currently recording his much-anticipated third album. As of yet untitled and due for release in 2011, this record sees Jack teaming up once again with celebrated producer/ songwriter Steve Booker. Not since co-writing songs for Jack’s debut, Between The Minds, have the pair worked together.

In the meantime it’s fair to say, if not a little of an understatement, that both have kept themselves very busy. Steve Booker has received accolade after accolade, most notably for his co-write of Duffy’s worldwide hit Mercy. While Jack’s song writing has always surpassed expectation, this new collection of songs sees an artist coming of age.

Jack will be also be joined by Jess Glynne, Richard Allman and Loui Rose.

Loui Rose: Blessed with a voice that lifts the listener out of the mundane and into the magical, 21 year old Loui Rose has been breathing new life into London's acoustic scene of late. Accompanied by guitarist and co-writer Sam Dixon, and armed with a handful of songs inspired by everything from the sex lives of foxes to the joys of a hangover, it's clear that Loui Rose won't be playing to such intimate audiences for long.

Born in Southampton into a creative family, Louis wasted no time in following her sister to London when she turned 18. Living out of a suitcase and sleeping on sofas, she continued her musical studies until it became clear that life viewed from a Starbucks window offered more inspiration than the classroom. Since dropping out of college in early 2010 she has been immersed in songwriting, performing and plotting her future.

Inspired by strong, imaginative, female performers, from Nina Simone and Patty Smith to Kate Bush and Bat For Lashes, plans are afoot to transform Loui's acoustic compositions into fully formed productions that do both her voice and songwriting justice. But for now we suggest you enjoy the beautiful simplicity of these early acoustic performances while you can.

Stop.Look.Listen. will then be stitching the night together with a wholesome array of weird and wonderful musical treats.

Hello again!

I've been a huge advocate of Adam Scrimshire's material ever since I first heard his album 'Along Came The Devil One Night', released on Wah Wah 45s in 2009. Adam had this to say of this new/old track featuring the enormous vocal talent of Rob Hynd:

This track was originally written in 2000. The vocal was re-recorded in 2006 and last week I finally recorded the backing track afresh.

It was on the first demo I handed to Dom at Wah Wah alongside I Was Love, so prior to the next album I feel like I've closed that circle.

I re-recorded this last week as I finally felt like I understood how to make it. It used to revolve around a sample but I stripped that and have recorded drums, bass, rhodes and guitars live for it. oh and tambourine.

I really hope you enjoy and download this. I've always loved the track, even if lyrically and musically it feels like an old, old thing.

So, after what seems like an age, my old mates over at Groovefinder Records will finally be releasing the remixes of Richard Earnshaw's gorgeous 'Cry Me A River' on 28th March.

As I may have mentioned (probably too often as I've been so excited - sorry!), the Scrimshire and Leftside Wobble mixes will be the first tracks going to press as a loose result of my A&R skills, having spent way too many hours of my life listening to music...

Anyhow, the finished result has made me confident the time hasn't been wasted, as the mixes are absolutely fantastic. There's already been big support from some of the world's top house DJs, so hopefully you'll be hearing this a lot over the summer! Even though I'm slightly bias(!), I honestly think this could be one of the remix packages of the year, so please spread the love.

NEW RELEASE : Kadija Kamara - Changes EP

Hi again!

Just wanted to drop you all a note about the wonderful Kadija Kamara, who last week released her much anticipated EP 'Changes' - a glorious four tracker featuring toe-tapping soul grooves and downtempo acoustic vibes.

Kadija is a hugely talented singer, songwriter and producer from south London, whose name has been appearing on line-ups right across town of late, including previous performances at our own WIRED and alongside the Wah Wah 45s lads as well.

'Changes' features four tracks of what Kadija would term 'alternative soul', drawing influence from a broad cross-section of musical genres. Excitingly, the first track on the EP - 'Talking 2 Myself' - also features Zed Bias, probably my favourite producer from the last 12 months (also under his Maddslinky moniker).

Hello everyone.

It's been a while, hasn't it? Yet again I feel obliged to apologise for my prolonged absence, but it's all been in the name of celebration and hard work, namely lots of family birthdays and exciting developments in my day job at Razorfish. Anyhow, I thought I'd just give you a quick update on what's been going on behind the scenes on the music front.

The first WIRED of the year was held on Monday 7th February and yet again surpassed all expectations. The acts included Matti Roots, Bea Munro and the fantastic Nate James (under his SugaShak guise). It's incredibly hard to pick out a favourite amongst the performances, as they were all so strong. Nate James' light-up neon specs, however, were just plain frickin' cool! I need a pair (even if they probably would make me look a plank).

Other highlights would have to be peering over the top of the booth to see Pixie Lott and X-Factor finalist John Adeleye - I'm a DJ to the stars now, don't cha know! (lol!) - as well as having the honour of playing Szjerdene's brand new track 'Lead The Way' for the first time, which was an absolute triumph. (Szjerdene is hard at work in the studio at the mo, so stay tuned for news on her new material!) Oh, and I forgot to mention, The Grand Spectacular also turned up to do a surprise performance of 'Being A Dickhead's Cool', a track made famous by a YouTube video which went viral with over 5 million views. I also had to do an interview with FidgetBox which was really nerve-racking, plus I kept looking at the floor and ceiling rather than at the camera - watch this space for that! Haha!

Anyhow, next up is my performance alongside the one Jamie Clews at Verve in Rugby tonight, then comes the second instalment of 'Get Lifted' at Zenith Bar in Angel on 28th February (check the photos from January's editions here), then 7th March I'm back at WIRED again before heading to Bali. How time flies!

Anyhow, hopefully things have calmed down for the time being, so I'll be trying to post more regular updates again. Keep your eyes peeled for some cool stuff I've got on the horizon - I'll be looking after digital promotion for a huge musical talent, I'll be taking further musical steps into the wonderful world of fashion, I'm currently working on some studio material with a number of WIRED artists, plus I've just had some very, very cool gigs offered-up. Keep 'em peeled! Oh, and if that wasn't enough, here's a blog dedicated to pictures of horses with hands riding bikes - I shit you not:

I got sent some pretty cool remixes of Nathan Watson's 'Reach Out' by one of the promo companies a week or so back. And it was only then that I realised Nathan is actually the frontman for The Bluesmith, who I've DJed alongside at WIRED and Concrete on many occasions! Wood for trees, as the saying goes...

Anyway, his solo project is something very special. Check the video for the original of 'Reach Out' above, and keep your eyes out for some dub-inspired remixes from Sed Soul in the near future, a prelude to the full album launch in March.

I've been a massive fan of Obenewa since I was introduced to her at WIRED some time ago. Since then, I've been lucky enough to DJ alongside her at a number of events and believe me, her live acoustic sets can melt the coldest of hearts. Plus she's a really lovely lass!

Obenewa's official EP launch is now imminent (*EXCITED*) and she's been steadily releasing more content via her site as the date approaches.

The launch is 27th February at The Tabernacle in Notting Hill, and Obenewa's promising some surprises - can't wait! In the meantime, check her awesome new website here and the preview video above.

REVIEW : A Busy Week!

Hi all,

So it's been a busy week of music this week, mainly because my day job working on McDonald's has been super busy.

The week started with the launch night of 'Get Lifted' at Zenith Bar off the Essex Road. It turned out to be a great success - the acts were absolutely fantastic, so much so I found myself nodding with my eyes closed like a proper jazz donkey at one point! The venue is really homely and intimate as well. Can't wait for the next edition in March...

Then there was the start of my super-secret-undercover Tuesday night residency at Saatchi & Saatchi's agency pub, The Pregnant Man. If anyone works in the Saatchi building, feel free to pop down. And artists: if you fancy having your music aired to some of the TV ad peeps, drop your tracks over to me...

So yeah, by Wednesday I was pretty knackered to say the least (getting old you see - and my 27th birthday is just round the corner too *groan*). T'was well worth it though, particularly as I had lots of positive feedback on my sets this week, plus lots of requests for CDs an' ting. IDEAS : Royal Crown Revue - Hey Pachuco!

Apologies if my posts seem a little random today - I had quite a few glasses of rather wonderful red wine last night (check Lidl for cheap but decent vino - honest), then went to bed at 1am and got up at 4.45am!

So, continuing on my random haven't-had-enough-sleep tip, you might remember a film called The Mask starring a then fresh-faced Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz. Well, this film featured an absolute killer of a track during the scene at the Coco Bongo (you know the one!). That track, I've since discovered, is 'Hey Pachuco!' by a band called Royal Crown Revue. This thing is dancefloor dynamite and I can't wait to give it a whirl.

Anyhow, give it a listen, and be sure to dig out your dusty Mask VHS this weekend if you're looking for a decent flick. Schmokin'!

SAMPLE SATURDAY : Smokin Beats - Nothing Stays The Same

Morning everyone!

Just had Howard from Reprise Agency stop over and drop off a load of my vinyl that's been sitting in their office for about 18 months - was like Christmas all over again!

Amongst the stash was this cut from Smokin Beats - Nothing Stays The Same, released on their self-titled label in 1999. I still remember first hearing this on a Ministry Magazine compilation years ago when I was at school, and proceeding to dance round my room like a loon listening to it on repeat over and over again. Still a firm favourite of mine, this is disco house which perfectly captures the spirit of that late-90s period on the underground dance scene.

What had me so enthused was the hook the track is built on, which I've since found out was sampled from Black Ivory's track 'Mainline', released on the Buddah label in 1979. The track was well ahead of its time, ranking with some of the more polished disco cuts from about '81, '82.

Anyway, just thought I'd share the YouTube vids with y'all, just coz they're awesome.

Something else that caught my ear was this crazy track from San Fran-based Frite Nite label boss Salva. Really loving his stuff at the minute (with Frite Nite also being home to another of my favourite producers B. Bravo) - synth-heavy, bass-shaking electronic funk, 'Wake Ups' perfectly showcases this future dancefloor business for the DâM-FunK and Hudson Mohawke generation. Can't wait to air this at my forthcoming shows in the next few weeks. And be sure to keep your eyes open for new material from Salva and Frite Nite in the coming months - I've got a good feeling they'll be putting more treats our way very soon...

Evening all,

Just before Christmas I was lucky enough to receive a special parcel in the post from Tru Thoughts containing the latest album from Wildcookie, aka Freddie Cruger (Red Astaire) and Anthony Mills.

Entitled 'Cookie Dough', I've had the album on constant repeat for the best part of a month now and can report that it's a very special record indeed. A crazy but beautiful fusion of styles and influences, the biggest tracks for me are 'Heroine' (which I think will be the lead single from the album) and 'Serious Drug'. A perfect blend of jazz, funk, soul and dub-influenced cuts, this is one of those albums best enjoyed front-to-back when you've got the time to let your thoughts wonder. You can preview four tracks from the album above, and check the new video for 'Heroine' below for more more deep, introversion-inducing visual accompaniment - great stuff.

The album will be out via Tru Thoughts on 22nd February - make sure to grab yourself a copy and keep an eye-out for new output from this great new project. I certainly will be.

I've only just got onto Slakah's material, ever since I found myself embarrassed when asked at a gig, "You don't know who Slakah The Beatchild is?!". Since then, I've realised just why there was cause to pull me up on such a criminal gap in my musical knowledge, and I've been hammering 'B-Boy Beef' and 'Down' at every gig for several months now.

The production on Slakah's material is watertight and funky as hell, with his dynamic vocal style allowing him to be just at home reciting more touchy-feely ballads ('Something Forever', 'Illusions') as he is with the more uptempo dancefloor jams ('B-Boy Beef', 'Down', 'D.A.N.C.E.').

This album is truly superb and well worth the investment, so be sure to grab yourself a copy via BBE when it's released on Monday (24-01-2011).

"This Beautiful Feeling" : This song featuring Ebrahim is a reminder for us all to never take "Time" for granted. We can find joy in even bad moments.

"The Cure" : We've all had that one person in our life who like a prescribed drug made everything better in our life. But like any drug, you can get addicted to what makes you feel good.

"D.A.N.C.E." : Timeless vibes, memories in the making in the company of great friends or the soul synchronization of a stranger, the positive energy exchanged between people when celebrating life, is at the root of what inspired this song.

"War Within" : Collaboration with Swedish soul artist Magnus Tingsek & Canadian artist Ebrahim. War Within was written and recorded while the two were in Toronto for Slakah the Beatchild's Vibe Love Smile Tour. This song relates to the inner wars one goes through when battling addiction.

Morning all!

Hope you've all had a great week. It's been another busy one for me, mainly because I was tasked with creating a Latin-inspired mixtape which was a lot more challenging than I first anticipated. It's surprising how difficult it can be to try and fit a soundtrack to a specific brand's personality! Anyhow, I'll try and post the mix up here shortly...

So onto gig news: next-up I'm seriously excited about playing for Lewis and the Urban Jazz Station (who played at WIRED in June last year) as part of their 'Get Lifted' launch night at Zenith Bar in Angel. The gig is on 31st January with doors opening at 7pm and entry completely free all night. I'll then be doing my WIRED thing and DJing around some incredible live acts. These include the critically-acclaimed poet, actress and singer Michaela the Poet, the utterly superb Yasmin Baker (keys, vocals) playing a full band set, and then an open jam session. Anything goes, so if you fancy coming down and jammin' with the band, the more the merrier! And then of course there's the Urban Jazz Station themselves, who will be neatly tying everything together.

Yasmin was kind enough to offer Stop.Look.Listen. readers a free download of her track 'Don't Fall In Love', which I've been listening to on loop for the last 20 minutes or so. Incredible soulful vibes, this track really showcases the talent and energy that's had her dubbed 'The Dancing Pianist'. Enjoy, and hope to see some of you there on 31st January. REVIEW : DJ Jazzy Jeff feat. Erro - Rock Wit U (Yoruba Soul Mixes) (BBE)

Evening everyone,

Just thought I'd check in to review some of the gems rockin' my 'Pod at the minute.

Another great release I received lately was this new remix package of 'Rock Wit U' from DJ Jazzy Jeff and Erro. Featuring four mixes of this track from 2002, the A-side sees house stalwarts Yoruba Soul roll out some lush deep house vibes - the vocal mix perfect for the beach bar, the dub geared more for the dancefloor. Both feature Yoruba's signature Latin percussion, with the vocal components perfectly weighted against the tight backing rhythms. Typical, in the best possible way. Gorgeous grooves to soothe the soul...

What's even better about this pack is the flip, which offers a completely different vibe in the form of Jazzy Jeff's own remake of 'For Da Love Of Da Game', feat. Raheem, V and Erro. In much the same vein as his other recent remixes (think the Roller Boogie mix of 'No Strings' by Mayer Hawthorne), downtempo hip-hop beats lead the track here, flanked on either side by uplifting, blissful key progressions and guitar work. I'd say this is probably the most versatile track on the package, as I could see myself digesting this just as easily in a Clapham bar as I could an Ibiza beach party. Great stuff - will definitely be looking to air the Jazzy Jeff mix at Shoreditch House on 7th Feb - perfect vibes for WIRED! ;-)

FREE DOWNLOAD : Various Artists - Two Syllables Volume Five (First Word Records)

Just before Christmas, one of my favourite labels First Word Records released the latest instalment of their Two Syllables compilation series, available for download absolutely FREE. It's taken me a while to give it a proper airing as I've been rushing around London, but I've finally managed to give it a decent listen...

Again, it almost seems criminal that labels this strong are releasing whole albums of material for gratis. But anyhow, take a listen - for a free comp this represents stupendously good value, featuring a host of jazzy, soulful grooves, exactly the vibe you'd expect from First Word. The albums also features some big producers from 2010, including SLL faves Red and Souleance.

Personal faves at the moment are the gorgeous dub vibes on East Park Reggae Collective's 'Love Radar' (I'm proper into my dub at the minute!) and Andy H's remix of 'Tu No Sabes Nada' by Phuture Motion (see if you can guess where the drum loop is ripped from!).

One of the best compilations I've heard in a while, so get downloading! :-)

REVIEW : Lanu - Beautiful Trash feat. Megan Washington (Tru Thoughts)

At last, it's the weekend! :-) Hope you've all got exciting plans...

So I've gathered together quite a few juicy promos this week. Tru Thoughts were kind enough to send me a nice little package, within which was the new single from Lanu (producer/guitarist from The Bamboos) entitled 'Beautiful Trash' which is due for full release on 7th February.

As is fairly typical with Robert Luis' ear for new music, this is understated upbeat pop, with Megan Washington's catchy vocals swimming along over the acoustic drum track really nicely. The track is reminiscent of numerous pop acts I remember as a kid, with it's infectious melody, melancholic undertone and lyrics you can't help but sing along to. I especially like the opening line, 'You were just a stranger with your vodka soda', which resonated with me personally as I'm on a diet at the moment, with vodka lime soda currently my tipple of choice (did you know there's only 70-odd calories in a shot of vodka?!). Anyhow, I digress...

Flip it over and there's a darker reinterpretation by The Hidden Orchestra, who have been making waves on the eclectic circuit over the last few months on the back of releasing their debut album 'Night Walks' in September last year. Full of their signature orchestral stabs and atmospherics, it retains the integrity of the original vocal, but has darkened the vibe for early morning floors.

A great teaser for the full album 'Her 12 Faces' which is out in March. Can't wait for that one...

So after a really relaxing Sunday drink in the pub and a walk along the canal, I came back home refreshed enough to compile a mid-month January podcast, fair penance for several months of not releasing one!

Anyhow, you'll probably pick-up on the mood I was in - this edition is packed with loads of soothing downtempo electronica, lo-fi hip-hop and soulful melodies: a perfect antidote to the naff weather outside and a nod to the summer we're all looking forward to.

Just found this in my Inbox and have just been transported back to 2006 when I was playing Chicago house at my residency at Funki Sushi in Bournemouth. Good times! :-)

This new promo from Dust Traxx is a peak-time jackin' Chicago floor-filler, awash with phasing filtered disco stabs. FUNKY AS HELL. Will definitely be giving this a spin. Here's the sleeve notes...

SECOND CITY RHYTHM is Garrett Shrigley and Lee Dunn, better known by their artist monikers, Adulture and Ghosts of Venice. They began producing together during their two week US Tour in February of 2010. After working together for the majority of 2010 they are both proud to release "You Got Me" for free as a preview for their upcoming Dust Traxx Chicago release.

Second City Rhythm's self titled debut EP is currently slated for release March 22, 2011 as a Beatport exclusive.

"You Got Me" is a perfect blend of disco's infectious vocal style with reference to the Chicago house sound of yesterday. These elements combined make this the perfect introduction of this exciting project, Second City Rhythm.

REVIEW : Dimlite - My Human Wears Acedia Shreds (NowAgain)

Trippy hip-hop vibes on this latest promo of 'My Human Wears Acedia Shreds' by Dimlite, which I received a few days ago via Stones Throw.

The standout track here is 'Loins', with warm vocal crescendos cutting through the hip-hop acoustic drum track - this is definitely the cut for the dancefloor.

Then there's 'Kitty Cradle Fog' which is, to put it lightly, plain weird, but in a really wonderful way. A patchwork of electronic stabs, vocal snippets, atmospherics and organic samples, this is the kind of innovative hip-hop track I'd imagine Dorian Concept or Dam Funk writing for a laugh. I really enjoy it when tracks like this come along to test your senses and wind-up broadening your musical horizons. Great stuff - will definitely be airing both tracks.

FORTHCOMING : George Levin - Intangible EP, The Bonus Tracks (BBE)

BBE were kind enough to send me some fantastic promos at the beginning of the month. Amongst them was this forthcoming release from Georg Levin - The Bonus Tracks from his Intangible EP. As you'd expect from BBE, this is another incredible package jammed with deep, soulful electronic vibes.

Reminiscent of Paul Randolph's output on Sonar Kollektiv, 'Intangible' is the first standout track on this package, with Georg's smooth and sultry vocals sliding over the soft house beats perfectly. Then there's the cover of Stevie Wonder's 'That Girl', which is also beautifully produced and perfectly mastered, with hypnotic chants and electronic chords cutting through the typically 70s production in perfect harmony. An inventive update on the original, I'll definitely be giving both tracks a hammering over the next couple of months. Anyhow, the sleeve notes do it good justice, so I'll hand over to the lovely people at the label.

Intangible EP - The Bonus Tracks" features two songs that were previously only available on the vinyl LP of Georg Levin's album "Everything Must Change". Here the songs feature the instrumental and dub versions as well as BBE chief Peter Adarkwah's album pick "I need to understand".

"Intangible" is Georg's band's favorite song and became the opener of his live shows this year. For both the band and the audience this rather slow but infectious groove is a great warm up that puts everyone into the right gear. Listening to it on your car stereo is highly recommended.

"That Girl" is a Stevie Wonder song from the beginning of the 80s that some people might remember. As Georg puts it: "When Stevie Wonder's 'Original Musiquarium' came out I was about ten years old. My godfather gave it to me and I listened to it all the time. Without knowing that it was a collection of songs from more than a decade ago, I did notice that some songs sounded to me, different than the others. It was the time when Stevie Wonder changed his organic 70s sound into his drum-machine driven 80s setup, while the songwriting more or less remained the same. 'That Girl' was one of the songs that marked that change and I often wondered later on how this would have sounded if Stevie came up with it a few years earlier. So the initial idea of my cover version was to 'seventy-fy' this song - but at the same time to put it into a modern context. The thing missing here is Stevie's original voice, that's why it didn't make the CD album.

REVIEW : Various Artists - Shapes 10:02 (Tru Thoughts)

Released shortly before Christmas, the latest in the 'Shapes' Tru Thoughts compilation series is another 30-track blinder.

As usual, CD1 focuses on iPod-ready downtempo treats, perfect for at-home listening or toe tapping in warmer climbs. Most notable are the opening dub vibes with a remix from SLL fave Prince Fatty on Natural Self's 'Midnight Sun', as well as a superb dub version of the Doctor Who theme from Smerins Anti-Social Club.

There are then brand new cuts from other usual suspects including Alice Russell, Nostalgia 77, Belleruche and Quantic. And as if that wasn't enough, the first disc also features my favourite track of 2010 - Maddslinky's 'Further Away'. The CD then wraps-up with a sublime acoustic version of 'Like Tears in Rain' from The Bamboos - a sure-fire hit for the beach bars this summer. If you're still feeling the January blues biting hard, this CD will be sure to have you looking forward to those warmer, hazy summer days. Bliss.

CD2 then looks to the dancefloor, with a number of standout tracks including Randomer's remix on The Bamboos' 'Keep Me in Mind' (a huge track for me in the latter months of last year), a warm, bass-rumbling remix of Maddslinky's 'Special' by house stalwart Atjazz, plus a super-jazzy version of Lizzy Park's 'Raise the Roof' by Lanu.

Honestly, it almost seems like daylight robbery to legally obtain 30 tracks of such superb calibre on CD for just four quid. Yes - £3.99!!! I guess it's a testament to the fact Robert Luis and the Brighton-based Tru Thoughts gang consistently prioritise its output above all else. And how wonderful it feels to be so spoilt by a record label in such an unashamed way. *Warm glow*

The definitive soundtrack to my early 2011, this is yet another cracker from one of my favourite labels. Buy it now!

One for the peak-time floor, this is an infectious party tune with a serious edge. I'd go as far to say this could end up being one of my big tunes of 2011 already!

Produced by Trackademicks and featuring upcoming talent 1-O.A.K., this is said to be a good indication of what to expect from Josie this year. Having set the bar so high, I'll be excited to hear her new output in the coming months. Watch this space.

REVIEW : Christmas and New Year 2010

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year break. Happy 2011 to you all!

The Christmas and New Year period was really hectic for me (as it is for everyone), so I was solely relying on Facebook and Twitter for flinging my own special type of verbal diarrhoea, so apologies for neglecting those checking in here to find the cupboard bare over the past month or so.

Exclusive Labrinth Acoustic Set, Shoreditch House (21st Nov 2010)

Anyhow, the holiday season was ACE. I was lucky enough to play at some great parties around London and a couple in Kent. Early in December I also got a chance to chat with Labrinth at length when he did an exclusive acoustic set to about 30 people on the roof of Shoreditch House. I spent most of the time explaining how I was planning on recording my first number one hit on a series of children's toy instruments I had purchased in a drunken haze. Hmmm. Anyhow, the set was incredible, with his rendition of 'Let The Sun Shine' a real moment, not just poignant because Lab explained the track had very special meaning as he'd written it when he was just a kid, but because I turned around to see Tinie Tempah standing behind me. A real Avid Merrion moment for me. (Thank you please.) I also had the pleasure of chatting more with the lovely Obenewa about her plans for 2011. Etta Bond's 21st Birthday, Shoreditch House (5th Dec 2010)

At the beginning of December I then had the honour of DJing for Etta Bond at Shoreditch House as part of her 21st Birthday celebrations alongside Obenewa and DJ Excalibah from BBC 1Xtra, although I do need to offer a formal apology for soaking the bottom of his trousers in cider! T'was a set full of classics, my favourite being a recently rediscovered Christmas anthem by Run DMC - 'Christmas in Hollis' (thanks for the tip Dan!). You may remember it featuring in the opening scene of Die Hard, when the limo driver Argyle whacks on some "Christmas music" whilst taking John McClane to the Nakatomi Plaza building. Anyhow, I digress - I defy anyone to find a more dancefloor-friendly Christmas track, and was definitely my festive cut for the rest of the party season.

Razorfish Christmas Party, The Bathhouse, Liverpool Street (13th Dec 2010)

Another personal highlight was DJing with my work mate James at our agency Christmas party (I work at a digital ad agency called Razorfish, don't cha know) which this year was held at The Bathhouse in Liverpool Street. It's a great little venue - a slightly kitsch and avant-garde kind of place, where the DJ booth has been fashioned into a bird cage - but the staff were terrific and the food great.

NYE 2010 @ The Hare, Tunbridge Wells, Kent (31st Dec 2010)

I also played a few parties in Kent, one being a house party for my mate Lauren, the other being New Year's Eve playing at a great little boozer called The Hare in Langton Green, Tunbridge Wells. NYE was great and ran swimmingly, despite me having to hire all the equipment in. Tip for anyone needing a decent soundsystem and lighting rig - drop Matt at Complete Disco Events a line. It's always so difficult to find decent, professional hire companies that don't cost the earth, but Matt was absolutely superb, as was the system he bought down for the night.

Anyway, over 7 hours I worked through every musical genre imaginable, playing everything from Gil Scott Heron to Lady Gaga, and overall the night went off without a hitch, even if my mic skills do still need some work! After lots of careful consideration, I also saw in the New Year with a tune that was completely unplanned - Dizzee Rascal's 'Dance Wiv Me', which actually worked pretty well.

Overall, the staff were great (big thanks to Rob and Zoe), as were the crowd and happily I must have made a good impression - I got a text from the venue's management on 1st Jan asking if they could book me for NYE 2011. I think that must be the first time I've got a booking one year in advance. Lol!

Looking to 2011

And so to 2011. I have no doubt it's going to be a busy year, but I'm really excited by all the great opportunities on the horizon. For me, I'll be continuing with my usual gigs, giving you lots to do and make here, working on some remixes and hopefully ramping things up in the podcast department. I'd really like this space to be useful to you all though, whether you're a casual reader, DJ, producer, whatever. So please let me know if there's anything I can be doing to make this a more helpful resource in 2011.

In more exciting developments, I've just taken a brief to programme two new catwalk show soundtracks, in March I'll be heading our to Kuala Lumpur and Bali to try my luck DJing over there, and then towards the end of the summer I'll be shooting over to Portland and San Francisco to play there as well (my first time in the States!) . Woohoo!

Before I sign-off, I'd also like to send my best wishes to WIRED regulars Ed Sheeran and Daley, who I heard name-dropped on Radio One a number of times over Christmas as ones to watch for 2011, with Ed supporting Example on tour before Christmas and Daley named as one of the year's most promising new artists, following his recent collaboration with Gorillaz on the fantastic 'Doncamatic'.

Congratulations and best of luck to them and all the fantastic WIRED artists for the forthcoming year - looking forward to working with you all again soon and meeting the class of 2011. Just last night I had a dream that I saw Ella Chi on MTV, so hopefully that's a good omen! :-)
